The Idaho State city of Idaho Falls, with a population of 60,000, can trace its history back to its founding in 1864. It is also the home of the Sandy Downs racetrack, hosting 12 days racing annually over a month long period. The 6 ½ furlong oval track offers a programme of thoroughbred and quarter horse races, culminating in the running of the Hawthorne Futurity, although the Hadtobenuts Derby is another highly regarded event. In 2011 the Hawthorne Futurity was won by Wayward Wings, while the Hadtobenuts Derby went to Lajolla Famosa.
